This is a fairly recent album, and I only found it after it came up on a friend’s Pandora radio stream. If you don’t know what Pandora is or have never used, finish reading this and then go look up Pandora, because I guarantee it will blow your mind. Many “professional” reviews have bashed the album over stuff that I don’t understand. Maybe they just don’t understand that the music is supposed to be relaxing and just flow, unlike other hardcore rap. Listen to “Buzzin’” below, and see what you think.

How can you not enjoy that music? I can understand somewhat if you don’t like rap, but even some of our friends who strongly dislike rap think Shwayze’s music is tight. Just goes to show you that the so called pros aren’t right all the time, especially in the case of rating music. My other favorite songs are “Roamin’”, “Lazy Days” and “Polaroid”.

The one aspect I don’t like about the music is the similarity between certain songs. Some of them have a basic guitar line with soft, southern singing over it that can get monotonous. However, if you break the songs up in a playlist, they go really well with most other genres of music and are great for chill parties with friends.

Wouldn’t necessarily call it rap, but it’s still fun to listen to both by yourself and at parties, and can get any audience excited. Well, maybe not really old people, but you never know.

Black Eyed Peas make amazing music, as can be seen on many of the tracks on the album. Most of the songs have good solid rhythms, making for a great dancing atmosphere. Many a friend has started dancing ridiculously and singing along to “Pump It”, one of the most popular songs on the album. Others include “Don’t Phunk With My Heart” and “My Humps”, both solid songs. The music video for “Pump It” is below. The sound is very quiet and the quality not so good because it’s the only video that will actually let me embed it into the site, so you can go on YouTube yourself and search for the song if you want the highest quality version.

Their next album comes out June of this year, and I’m quiet excited for this new release. It’s been a long time since Monkey Business, their last album, so hopefully they will have some more super tight music to enjoy. Also, check out their songs “Where is the Love?” and “Let’s Get it Started”; both are great tracks and deserve a listen. Enjoy!

Once again, I’m venturing into the vast genre of rock for this week’s featured album. I know many people don’t consider Greatest Hits compilations true albums, but there are so many great Offspring songs spread throughout their CD’s that this was the only way to do them all justice.

I really enjoy listening to The Offspring because they manage to pull songs together perfectly. They have an upbeat drum beat, tight guitar solos and background and the lyrics for the songs are very catchy. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had “You’re Gonna Go Far, Kid” stick in my head. Of course, after writing that, I’ve managed to ingrain the chorus of the song into my brain, once again.

It’s difficult to pick a couple of songs out of the mix, but I enjoy listening to “You’re Gonna Go Far, Kid”, “Self Esteem” and “The Kids Aren’t Alright” the most out of all the songs on the album. That’s not to say there aren’t other brilliant songs on the album, but those are my favorites. The video for the “The Kids Aren’t Alright” is below, enjoy!

Next week we’ll be going back to some more rap music because that’s what I mostly enjoy. Until then, peace.

I’ll start this post out by saying that Graduation is one of my favorite albums. Ever. Kanye West is a great rapper and combined with the tight beats on the album, the songs just strike that perfect musical chord. It’s not extremely heavy rap, but it gives you a nice feeling and makes you want to go out and have fun.

I wish I could say the same thing about his newest album, but frankly, it sucks. Kanye turned to the voice box, more techno sounding beats and seemed to forget how to rap. He lost the aspect that he is best known for, and just became a Lil Wayne imitator. That is not how you go about selling records or getting more fans. Yes, some people loved his sappy songs, but seriously, start producing some real music again.

My three favorite songs on the CD are “Stronger”, “Good Life” and “Homecoming”. “Stronger” and “Good Life” are more traditional songs with catchy choruses and decent rap interludes. I feel like they are overplayed, which is why I enjoy “Homecoming” so much. It’s very inspirational and I love the lyrics. Buy the album and hopefully support Kanye’s continued career as a rapper, not as a techno wannabe.

Homecoming feat. Chris Martin

Twin Solid State Musical Tesla coils playing the Zelda theme song.
The music that you hear is coming from the sparks that these two identical high power solid state Tesla coils are generating. There are no speakers involved. The Tesla coils stand 7 feet tall and are each capable of putting out over 12 foot of spark. They are spaced about 18 feet apart. The coils are controlled over a fiber optic link by a single laptop computer. Each coil is assigned to a midi channel which it responds to by playing notes that are programed into the computer software. What is not obvious is how loud the coils are. They are well over 110dB. Listen for the echo after the notes stop. These coils were constructed by Steve Ward and Jeff Larson. Programming and musical content by Steve Ward. Video was captured by Terry Blake and edited by Jeff Larson.

The above excerpt was taken from the information next to the Youtube video.

This week, we are returning to the rap genre to bring you our album of the week, We The People by Flipsyde. Unlike many of our other rap albums on the site, I believe We The People is more relaxing and meant for background music. That’s not to say the album is bad, it just lacks the a few of the characteristics that usually appear in rap music. The beats, while tight, don’t feature extreme use of bass.

Even with the more mellow beats, the lyrics contain sections with rapid speech and mind blowing content, which is a huge factor in my favorite music. There are quite a few solid songs on the album, but I do have a few particular favorites. I think “Someday” is the best song because of its tight rapping and catchy chorus and beat that just gets stuck in your head (in a good way). Some of my other favorites are “Angel”, “Get Ready” and “Skippin’ Stones”. Enjoy the music, and check back next week for some more great tunes!

Sometimes you just need a chance to sit and relax. This music is designed to help you do that — play it in your car during a nasty commute and calm yourself. Or kick it with your friends and have a chill weekend night. In any context, this kind of music will leave you feeling soothed and sleepy afterwards. Check it out.

Telepopmusik — Breathe
I found this while watching a skydiving video on YouTube. The perfect place for this kind of music — it feels just right. Free and calming. This is one of the more popular modern songs on the list, a fine introduction to what we’re after.

Ratatat — Wildcat
An awesome song that isn’t very well known. This is an instrumental, and as we like to say, super legit.

Jimi Hendrix — Castles Made of Sand
Guitar music designed to relax. Jimi’s a master, and this may be my favorite. The chorus is the best part — this is one of the most upbeat songs on the list, but it’s a classic.

Radiohead — Gagging Order

A sad song, but one of Radiohead’s finest. It is also one of their less well-known pieces, which makes it all the better.

Royksopp — In Space
This is an instrumental song as well, ambient music that is extraordinarily soothing. Royksopp made the song Remind Me that was featured in a Geico Advertisement, the one about the caveman.

Moby — Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad
Contrary to what Eminem has to say, Moby is a great man with a firm place in American music. People do listen to techno. This particular song is a great one, you may have heard it in the trailer for Black Hawk Down.

Ben Harper — Burn One Down
Ben Harper, with the help of some sweet drumming, sings a song that makes me want to sit by the campfire and stare at the stars. It’s totally calming, great music.

The Eagles — I Can’t Tell You Why
The Eagles are best known for their hit single Hotel California, but this song is both their chillest and my favorite. Acoustic rock, the intro and musicality are both great, but the chorus line is the best part. Check it out.
