Paul has correctly predicted every German result of this World Cup, even calling the 1-0 Serbia upset over Germany in the group stage. The only incorrect result Paul has ever picked was in the 2008 Euro final, when Spain beat Germany. The German’s can only hope Paul has picked incorrectly once again.

That lovely mugshot is of Donald Duck, an unfortunately named 51 year old from Massilon, Ohio. No word on whether he was named for Disney’s feathery cartoon character, but according to local police he is a ‘frequent flyer’ when it come to traffic violations. Mr. Duck has 4 previous drunken driving convictions, and was arrested on June 26th for ‘repeatedly bumping the car ahead of him’ at a pizza drive through. When law enforcement arrived at the scene Duck “smelled of alcohol and suffered from red, glassy eyes.” To make this situation funnier, when he opened the door of his car, a bag of marijuana fell out. Pizza drive-through munchies, anyone? Police Capt. Joe Herrick said “he’s not that good a driver.” Thanks for the update, Joe.

The AquaDom is the world’s largest cylindrical aquarium, located in the Radisson SAS Hotel in Berlin. Opened in 2004, it is 25 meters tall, and holds a million liters of saltwater. This beautiful piece of engineering is home to more than 2600 fish of approximately 100 species — and employs 2 full-time divers to feed the marine life and clean the tank. The outer shell is made of acrylic (the world’s largest acrylic cylinder) and the whole tank sits on 9-meter concrete foundation. Visitors experience the AquaDom by riding a transparent elevator through the center of the aquarium. Total cost of the project? About 12.8 million euros.

Here’s a quote about the project from the manufacturer — International Concept Management:

The resulting design: maintains perfect water clarity (an enormous feat given the aquarium’s height), water pressure and unique viewing capabilities; features structural elements that enable the right fish species to inhabit each level of the aquarium while protecting smaller fish from their larger predators, and brings in natural sunlight needed to support critically endangered species.

Opened in April 2004, the AquaDom still soars: an outstanding marvel of creative imagination, technical engineering and precise installation.

This photo was taken near the tiny fishing village of Kremmervika during an expedition to surf the arctic circle. The team was led by film maker Yassine Ouhilal who was accompanied by world class surfers Matt Whitehead, Cyrus Sutton, Christian Wach, and Pat Millin. They started in the 700-person town of Ballstad on the island of Vestvågøy in Norway in the spring of 2008 and traveled north through the Lofoten islands, surfing along the way. Eventually they made it all the way to the coast of Russia, but soon found out that most of the country’s northwestern Arctic coast is off-limits to anyone not in the military so they were unable to get in the water. While planning the trip, charts showed that waves would be better in the winter, but it was deemed suicide to try surfing during the coldest and darkest part of the year. Even the spring temperatures hovered between 20 and 45 degrees Fahrenheit; not exactly the most ideal surfing weather. As they traveled around they often found beautiful, calm beaches that taunted them with signs of large waves that came just days before. When asked what prompted surfers from California and Australia to travel to the arctic to surf, Millin replied “I guess it’s the isolation. That’s why I wanted to come here. How many people are surfing in Hawaii right now? How many thousands?” The following is an excerpt from an Outside article about their expedition that helps explain even further.

We’ve been driving for 14 hours straight. Just as we’re about to give up on surfing for the day, Whitehead spots the fluorescent lines of whitewater squiggling into a bay. Ouhilal stops the car on the roadside.

“Yeah, that’s surfable,” he says. Whitehead jumps into the backseat and rustles through the nest of wetsuits. Minutes later, he vanishes into a thicket of thorny bushes and bounds down the snow-and-moss-covered rocks that lead to the beach.

By the time Ouhilal and I make it to the clearing, ten minutes later, Whitehead is paddling for his first wave, a neck-high point break that lazily arches its back along an exposed black-rock reef and then catapults him down a wall of glassy water. I watch as he rides a few feet in front of me, the wave’s face reflecting the crescent moon before it shoots him into inky blackness.

For this session there are no cameras, no poses, nothing to prove. We’re just three people floating in the Arctic Ocean, surfing a wave that’s been breaking alone for tens of thousands of years. We’re the first to feel its shape, trace its movements, be a part of this big, marvelous, living thing. An hour later, as we pull ourselves from the water and retrace our steps back to the van, everyone is smiling. Whitehead names the break Broken Hearts, after a local Ballstad girl who shirked his advances last week. “To me, that makes it all worth it,” says Ouhilal. “To do this—it’s a very special thing.”

Below are some pictures taken by Yassine Ouhilal as well as a movie he produced about the expedition. Well worth it to watch.

Now, if you haven’t heard about the BP oil fiasco by now, please go read a newspaper, surf the internet for 5 minutes or turn on your TV. Assuming you aren’t living under a rock, you are probably pretty pissed off at BP for single handedly attempting to kill off wild life in the Gulf of Mexico. One man was fed up with the absurdity that is BPs public relations and created a Twitter account, BP Global PR.

It is a very entertaining read, with tweet after tweet of sarcastic comments about the amount of oil flooding the Gulf and BP’s extremely slow response time to the disaster. At least now the containment cap has been successfully placed on the leaking pipe, although it will still be several months before all the oil flow has been stopped.

We’re not sure what it is about Guatemala City, but it must sit on top of Hell’s Caverns or something. Just today a gigantic sinkhole suddenly opened up in the city, the second major one in the last few years. We’re happy to report that there seem to have been no casualties. See more photos of these two unbelievably scary incidents in the gallery below.

They say the first was due to a broken sewer line, and claimed the lives of 3 people. The second one, the most recent one, is due to huge rainfall from Tropical Storm Agatha. Both opened up suddenly, in the middle of a major city. Scary.

Have you always wanted to win a ton of money by sitting on your couch playing video games? If so, you had an opportunity when Major League Baseball 2K10 was first released. Called the “Perfect Game Challenge”, Take-Two said they would pay the first person to pitch a perfect game one million dollars. Yes, that’s right, one million dollars.

Since none of the developers at Take-Two were able to accomplish the feat, they brazenly figured it was an excellent challenge for the masses and set about marketing it as the challenge of a life time. Enter Wade McGilberry, a 23-year old from Alabama.

Within 24 hours of purchasing the game, the day it came out, McGilberry had successfully completed the challenge, throwing a perfect game. Meanwhile, Take-Two had been unable to secure insurance for this bet, as no one was able to figure out the chances of this occurring. Obviously, they weren’t that low, as it only took one day for someone to successfully complete the challenge.

I’m jealous, wish I had his luck.

This is a picture of crews working for The Department of Water Protection in Los Angeles, CA pouring 3 million black plastic balls into the Ivanhoe Reservoir on June 10th, 2008. Scientists discovered that when sunlight is combined with the bromides and chlorine that are present in the water, a carcinogen bromate is formed which can be harmful to humans. The Department of Water Protection realized the problem and began construction of a new covered reservoir, but while a new underground facility was being built, they had to determine a way to keep the sunlight out of the water. They explored the possibility of tarps and metal coverings but they were either too expensive or very ugly. They settled on the idea of bird balls which are designed to keep water fowl from landing where they shouldn’t. They are non toxic, and only cost about 34 cents each. The total cost of protecting the Ivanhoe reservoir as well as the Elysian reservoir that was facing the same problem was 2 million dollars. The balls were estimated to remain in the water for five years until the new reservoir is completed.

Heads up — Season 13 of Top Gear started an hour and a half ago! And you know what that means, the most pirated TV show of all time is ready for your download. I, along with many others, would claim it to be the most entertaining show ever; it seems to have come directly from a teenage boy’s midnight fantasy.

It made our list of 7 Great TV Shows, and has won numerous awards for its incredible cinematography and enchanting immaturity.

Head over to our friends at Final Gear to get the latest on Top Gear, and find out how you can get access to the new Season 13. Maybe one day the BBC will realize Americans love Top Gear too, and release it here on time. Sigh.

Update: I just finished watching Season 13, Episode 1. It was a great one — the boys’ race from Kings Cross, London, to the bar of the Balmoral Hotel, in Edinburgh, using machinery from 1949. Jeremy takes a Peppercorn A1 Class Locomotive, May drives the gorgeous Jaguar XK120, and Hammond rides the world’s first ever superbike, the Vincent Black Shadow. In addition the Ferrari FXX is taken around the track (I don’t understand — it’s specifically NOT a road car), and The Stig takes off his helmet. Seriously. Whew.

And here’s a preview of what’s to come in the remainder of Season 13.
