These images are of cameraman Marco Queral alongside a 50ft humpback whale in the South Pacific. He has dedicated the last 17 years of his life to ocean photography and has come up with some amazing results.

He recognizes the intelligence and human characteristics of the animals he photographs and notices when they are in the mood to pose for pictures. Although the humpback whale is generally peaceful, due to its enormous size Queral is most definitely in danger getting this close. Despite this, the final images show that the risk is worth the reward.

The Kingfisher is a small, brightly colored bird that can be found almost anywhere in the world. They have excellent vision, and hunt by perching above a stream carefully watching for fish. When the Kingfisher spots prey they descend into a steep dive, and streamline as they hit the surface of the water. They compensate for the refraction due to the surface, and can judge underwater depths accurately. A membrane covers their eyes upon impact, protecting their vision. They seize the fish underwater, swim to the surface, and enjoy their meal. Very cool.

Heterochromia is a condition that causes eyes or irises to be different colors and can be present in humans as well as animals. This can either manifest itself as two eyes that are completely different, or abnormal coloration of a single eye. Biologically this is caused by varying levels of something called melanin which controls the eye pigmentation. Heterochromia can be a result of disease, injury, or it can be genetically inherited from one’s parents. Some notable people known to have heterochromia are Mila Kunis, Kiefer Sutherland, and Christopher Walken.

Hermit crabs rely on their shells for protection, but will leave their current shell for a new one when they get too large or if their shell is damaged. A crab will eventually choose to occupy a glass shell if it is placed in its tank and this allows them to be observed in an interesting way. The Blue Reef Aquarium in Newquay attempted this with shells that were hand-blown and based of of a design dating back to 1930. The reasoning was to be able to examine the inner workings of the hermit crab without damaging the outer shell. These pictures are from a different source, but it is quite incredible to see how the crab folds up its body to fit inside. The photo to the right shows the hermit crab displaying its interest in the shell before it climbed in.
