POTD: Nuclear Sub at the Beach
Guess where this happened. Did you guess near the Arctic Circle in Russia? Well done. This photo, which appears to be genuine, shows a Typhoon Class nuclear-powered submarine cruising by a beach in Severodvinsk, in very northern Russia. Typhoons were the largest class of submarine ever built, with a maximum displacement of 26,000 tonnes. They can be submerged for 180 days at a time, and cruise at up to 31 mph underwater. That is primarily due to the two pressurized-water nuclear reactors, producing 120,700 hp each and the twin XV-type steam turbines, rated at 49,600 hp each. Absurd. Due to the high operation costs of the Typhoons all but one have been retired. I’m assuming the one photographed above is the last remaining one. See more Typhoons below.
