Theo Jansen, Kinetic Sculptor
On the beaches of the Netherlands there is a new type of life. Called Strandbeests, they are the creation of Theo Jansen, a Dutch artist and kinetic sculptor. Using empty water bottles and plastic yellow tubes, and powered by the wind, his beasts utilize the power of the wind to walk on the sand. They are entirely mechanical, with newer species using binary brain-like counters and pressure-storage systems, all made out of very light materials. They are also startlingly beautiful. A video of them in action (in a BMW commercial in fact) is below, and plenty more of his work can be found online.
He also participated in one of the TED lectures, see it below. He comes off as a little crazy, but blindingly creative.
