POTD: St. Maarten Beach Flyby
The Princess Juliana International Airport is the second busiest airport in the Eastern Carribean and serves the Dutch part of the island of St. Maarten. More importantly to us, however, is the fact it has a long enough runway (though just barely) to accomadate the largest common commercial airliner, the Boeing 747. And, even more interestingly, the runway is is located just a few hundred yards from the ocean, with a beach in between. Maho beach is directly under the flight-path to runway 10, where planes pass within 40 feet of beachgoers. The pictures, when first published, looked so unreal they were widely regarded as fakes.
