Impressive and Creative Aquariums

Fish tanks and aquariums can be quite boring if there is no effort put into originality or complexity of the design. This post brings together some of the most creative and ingenious aquarium designs in the world, and as you will soon see they are–as we like to say–super tight.

Telephone Booth Aquarium:

With cellphones becoming so cheep and popular, telephone booths have become increasingly useless. Benoit Deseille and Benedetto Bufalino discovered a use for the old booths and created the aquarium shown above for the Lyon Light Festival in France. Below is a quote from one of the artists:

“With the advent of the mobile telephone, telephone booths lie unused. We rediscover this glass cage transformed into an aquarium, full of exotically colored fish; an invitation to escape and travel.”

Oita Marine Center, Japan:

The design of this feeding tank allows the fish to be fed through small openings along its side. It may seem as though the water should be flowing out of the tank, but it does not thanks to the tank’s clever design. Because the area above the surface of the water is air-tight, the air pressure outside of the tank holds the water in. A simpler way of thinking of it is as if the tank is a large straw filled with water. If a straw is placed in a cup of water and then removed with a thumb on the top the water will not flow out. When the thumb is removed the water will spill out because there is no longer a vacuum at the top. This is the same principle that was used in the creation of this tank, but on a larger scale. In any case, the result appears as though it defies reality which makes it quite intriguing.

“Fish Highway”:

This design uses the same physics property as the fish tank above except that the vacuum is created by filling the tubes entirely with water. The “Fish Highway” allows the fish to swim out of their tanks and all around the room, and it is essentially a large hamster cage that is more difficult to create. The tubes must be completely air-tight or else the water will escape, but as long as both ends remain submerged in the two tanks at the bottom, the water will not spill. Current is constantly flowing through the highway so a filter keeps the water clean, and magnets are used to remove the algae that can build up on the sides.
