POTD: Megyeri Bridge

This is an awesome photo of the construction of the Megyeri Bridge, formerly known as the Northern M0 Danube bridge. It crosses the Danube river between Buda and Pest, the two components of the famous city of Budapest. The bridge cost the Hungarian government about 300 million U.S dollars and opened in 2008. The total length of the cable stayed bridge is 1862 meters.

There was some controversy over the naming of the bridge, which was supposed to be decided via an online poll. Stephen Colbert, of American television fame, publicly request for his fans to vote for him in the naming competition. This place him, as of August 22, 2006 in first place, 14 million votes ahead of the second place name, Zrinyi hid, named for a Hungarian national hero. It was announced Colbert had won the vote, though by Hungarian national law he would have to be dead and fluent in Hungarian for the bridge to be named after him.
