Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel
The CBBT is a a marvel of modern engineering — 23 miles of combined bridges and tunnels connect the Delmarva Peninsula with southeastern Virginia. It crosses two major shipping lanes and uses 4 artificial islands as portals. The most impressive part of the CBBT is the two 1-mile tunnels that go under major shipping lanes. It was selected by the American Society of Civil Engineers as one of the Seven Engineering Wonders of the Modern World, though it has now been recently replaced by a newer construction.
The picture below shows the bridge-to-tunnel transition as it appeared when the CBBT was opened in 1964. It has since been upgraded to 4 lanes on the bridge sections and 2 in the tunnels.
